If there’s one kind of video guaranteed to make the internet collectively melt, it’s a rescue pup finally realizing he’s home for good.

That’s exactly what happened with Joey, an older Chihuahua whose sweet moment with his foster mom is tugging at thousands of heartstrings. In the now-viral clip, Joey sinks into her arms as she softly tells him, “I love you, Joey.” His tiny face relaxes. His little tongue peeks out in the most adorably derpy way. And just like that, you’re reaching for tissues.

The on-screen caption says it all: “Why foster dogs? If the only thing I give him is safety after 13 years without it, that’s enough.” Try watching that without getting emotional.

Viewers flooded the comments with hearts and tearful emojis. One user wrote about the magic moment “when you notice them melting into you and finally able to relax.” Another summed it up simply: “The feeling of safety and love.” And perhaps the most powerful comment praised Joey’s foster mom for stepping up when so many older dogs are overlooked, pointing out how heartbreaking it is that senior pups are often left behind.

In a follow-up reply, Joey’s mom shared even more about his situation. He’s considered “fospice,” meaning he’s a senior dog with medical needs who may not have much time left. Even so, she admitted that adoptable or not, she wouldn’t be able to let him go.

For those unfamiliar, fostering gives dogs a break from shelter life and a chance to decompress in a real home while they wait for adoption. It helps them feel safe, show their true personalities, and often improves their chances of finding a forever family.

Fospice fostering is even more special. It provides loving homes for super-senior or terminally ill dogs so they can spend their remaining days surrounded by comfort, warmth, and affection instead of kennel walls.

For Joey, that means however much time he has left, it will be filled with gentle words, soft arms, and the kind of love every dog deserves.
