Life is pretty sweet right now for the gorillas at the San Antonio Zoo — especially when veggie burgers are on the menu.
A fun video shared by the zoo shows several of its gorillas enjoying a special enrichment treat that looks a lot like a fast-food meal. The primates were given custom-made “veggie burgers” along with fries, and judging by their reactions, it was a huge hit.
The lucky gorillas — Shana, Juba, Andi, and Ajari — received the creative meal as part of the zoo’s enrichment program at the Congo Falls habitat. The idea behind the treats was inspired by Texas favorite Whataburger, but the ingredients were specially designed for the gorillas.
Instead of beef patties, the burgers were made using primate biscuits. The zoo staff also added toppings like lettuce and tomatoes, along with bread to complete the burger look. For the side dish, the gorillas were served “french fries” made from dried apple slices.
When the gorillas received their meals, their excitement was clear. Each one eagerly opened the box containing the food before diving into the tasty treat.

Some of the gorillas even played with the boxes first, showing curiosity about the new experience before realizing the delicious surprise inside.
The zoo says the veggie burgers were part of a special enrichment activity designed to keep the animals mentally and physically stimulated. Enrichment activities introduce new smells, textures, and challenges that encourage animals to explore, problem-solve, and stay active.
For gorillas, these kinds of experiences are important because they promote natural behaviors and help support overall well-being.
