A rescued Great Dane who had a rough start in life is finally discovering what it means to be a happy, playful dog—and her heartwarming transformation is melting hearts online.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis recently shared the story of Ruby Bridges, a large female Great Dane with white fur and brown spots who is now learning how to enjoy life after missing out on many of the experiences most puppies take for granted.
The shelter introduced Ruby in a Facebook post on March 6, where her sweet personality and touching backstory quickly caught the attention of animal lovers. The post has already drawn thousands of reactions and comments from people rooting for the gentle giant.
“Are you ready to fall in love with this adorable ‘lap’ dog!?” the rescue wrote in the post. “Meet Ruby Bridges, who at around 100 pounds, does not realize she cannot fit right on your lap but is perfectly happy to snuggle up next to you as well.”
Photos shared by the shelter show Ruby relaxing comfortably and leaning affectionately against people, but the rescue says her life wasn’t always so peaceful.
According to the organization, Ruby endured a difficult early life and “never really got to be a puppy.” She missed out on the normal structure, playtime and socialization that help young dogs grow into confident adults.
Now that she’s safe in foster care, Ruby is making up for lost time.
The big pup has started embracing the simple joys of being a dog—running zoomies, playing with toys and interacting with other dogs for the first time in her life.
The rescue says Ruby enjoys plenty of lounging, but she also has lots of energy and would do best in a home with a fenced yard where she can stretch her legs and play freely.
Because she didn’t have proper guidance early on, Ruby is still learning how to play appropriately with other dogs. She tends to use her paws, voice and big body during playtime, which can sometimes overwhelm more timid pups.
For that reason, the shelter believes she would thrive with patient adopters who understand she is still learning boundaries and building confidence.
Ruby is also adjusting emotionally to the idea that people won’t abandon her when they leave the house—something many rescue dogs struggle with after unstable beginnings.
Her foster mom currently works from home, which has helped Ruby settle into a daily routine and succeed with potty training.
The rescue also recommends a home with older children and no cats. Ruby hasn’t been tested with cats yet, but her playful energy and love of chasing suggest she would be happier in a cat-free household.
Despite the challenges she’s still working through, Ruby’s foster family says she is incredibly loving, eager to learn and full of personality.
She’s already picking up basic commands like “sit,” practicing “leave it,” and learning how to walk politely on a leash.
“If you are in for continuing to work with Ruby Bridges on training, she will make you proud as she continues to blossom,” the rescue wrote.
Ruby also has some adorable quirks that make her impossible not to love, including dramatic head tilts and sweet little “conversations” when she talks back to the people she trusts.
Once she feels comfortable, the shelter says, her affection is undeniable.
Now the gentle giant is simply waiting for the right family to give her the loving home she has always deserved.
