An empty-nester couple on TikTok thought they were finally entering their peaceful, kid-free era — until their sons had other plans.

The duo behind @emptynestermishigas had just started enjoying their newfound freedom when their kids stumbled across a post about a German Shepherd in need of a home. They begged their parents to adopt him. At first, it was a hard no. But like many great dog stories, that “no” didn’t last long — and that’s how Papa officially joined the family.

It didn’t take long for Papa to settle in… and pick a favorite.

Within the first week, it became obvious he had chosen Mom as his person — and he took that role very seriously. In a now-viral video, Papa can be seen making the funniest little noises every time Dad tries to get close to her, as if he’s personally in charge of security. The sounds alone are enough to make anyone laugh.

Thankfully, the jealousy phase didn’t last forever. Before long, Papa warmed up to Dad too, and now he’s happily soaking up love from both sides.

Fast forward a few months, and Papa is fully at home — and, by all accounts, completely spoiled. What started as a reluctant decision turned into the perfect addition to their family.

Viewers couldn’t get enough of Papa’s over-the-top devotion, flooding the comments with jokes and relatable stories.

One commenter joked, “Was the dog or the man rescued? Because the dog looks very comfortable…” — prompting Mom to laugh and reply that she might take Dad back to the shelter.

Others chimed in about the classic German Shepherd trait of choosing “their person,” with one user writing, “They protect the whole family, but always have that one ride-or-die human.”

Another popular comment read, “He’s been waiting his whole life to do a big protect,” while someone else compared Papa’s funny noises to “a door opening and closing.”

And maybe the best summary of all came from one viewer who imagined the dog’s thoughts: “You don’t need to touch her, thanks.”

Clearly, Papa made his choice — and he’s sticking to it.
