The life of a police dog can be filled with danger and violence. At best, you’re talking about grueling training practices and days spent on high alert, whether the dog is used for security or investigation using their powerful senses. Whatever their past work was, by the time a K-9 retires, they have certainly earned a life of rest and relaxation, away from the stress and responsibility that marked their younger years.
But this retired K-9 German Shepherd is taking on a new duty—a very tender one, caring for the needs of newborn orphaned puppies.
These newborn abandoned puppies were freezing a near death when the family of two retired K-9 dogs took them in. In fact, four of them were lost before being rescued. But the woman in this video and her German Shepherds snapped into action, reading incubators and tube feeders to try to save the ones that were left.

Newborn puppies, like human babies, are very vulnerable in the first weeks of life. They are born blind, deaf, and toothless, needing warmth and nearly round the clock care.
And that’s fine for a watchful, careful retired k-9 dog like the two seen here. Dax and Dragon my be “grumpy old men” but when it comes to these newborn puppies, they’re more than willing to be temporarily back on the clock.
“He’s in his crotchety grandpa who hates everyone but his grand babies era and they’re all his grand babies. Love this for him,” writes one person in the comments.
It’s adorable to watch these giant dogs observing newborn puppies that are smaller than their snouts.
We wish for the best possible outcome for these tiny creatures, and their careful, watchful foster parents. With luck, they’ll soon be big enough to learn some real skills from the retired K-9s.
