Raising puppies can be a lot of work, especially if the litter was a surprise. True, the mama dog will take care of feeding and grooming them for the first few weeks, but there’s still a lot to learn about and prepare for.

Between shopping for new puppy products and scheduling vet check-ups, you’ll want to research the stages of puppy development to ensure they’re reaching milestones appropriately. Better yet, take a note from the animal lovers at Twisted Shoe Farm, who are taking an active role in their puppies’ development.

On April 26, a trio of newborn Golden Retriever puppies met a few gentle horses as part of an early scent introduction exercise. Not only was this meeting beneficial for their growing brains and bodies, but it was downright adorable, too!

🌟 Did you know? 🌟 In addition to Early Neurological Stimulation(ENS), performing Early Scent Introduction (ESI)exercises with neonatal puppies leverages the same concepts of neuroplasticity, enhancing their olfactory abilities and overall development. By exposing puppies to various scents during their critical early stages (days 3-16), researchers believe this stimulation can increase the number of olfactory bulb cells, leading to improved scent detection and processing later in life. During a puppy’s early development, their brains are highly adaptable, with the ability to form new connections and strengthen existing ones based on various sensory experiences. A 7-year-long study conducted by Dr. Gayle Watkins with golden retrievers suggests that exposure to a variety of scents can lead to an increase in the number of cells in the olfactory bulb, improving scent detection and processing. Results of this study suggest puppies who undergo ESI tend to exhibit improved scenting ability, increased confidence, and a greater awareness of their surroundings. ESI can also contribute to improved stress tolerance and disease. ESI can be incorporated into various aspects of puppy development, including training for service dogs, scent detection work, or even enhancing a puppy’s ability to learn new commands and navigate their environment! Today the puppies smelled horses! To date, their favorite smell, by far, has been my slippers 😅 #earlyscent#puppyculture#golden#puppy

This is too sweet! The horses seem genuinely curious about the puppies in their mom’s arms, but they’re also relaxed and at ease. Either they’ve seen puppies (or other baby animals) before, or they’re naturally gentle and nurturing.

Maybe it’s both! The second horse didn’t hesitate to get closer to the sleeping puppies, and the pony even offered a kiss. It must have been magical for their human mama to witness this interspecies friendship, especially since she puts so much time, energy, and love into their care.

Commenters like KK agree that these horses “understood the assignment.” They’re so “gentle and friendly!” The one red pony who got a close look at the babies is giving nurturing—even motherly—vibes, and the tiny puppies are completely unfazed by their larger-than-life presence.
