Animals can sometimes form the sweetest and most unexpected friendships, and the bond between a cheetah and a Labrador Retriever at the Richmond Zoo in Moseley, Virginia, is living proof. Kumbali the cheetah and Kago the Lab have been best friends for over a decade, and people can’t get enough of their story.
TikToker @MythsandMakers recently shared a video of the pair during a September visit to the zoo, capturing Kago lovingly grooming Kumbali. The cheetah’s relaxed, happy face said it all—these two are completely devoted to each other. Viewers flooded the comments with love, with some even remembering them as babies. One person wrote, “OMG, the dog’s old white face! I remember when they were babies, I was obsessed with them.”

Kumbali and Kago’s friendship goes way back. The zoo explained that when Kumbali was just a cub, he needed companionship, so staff brought in a puppy to be his buddy. For decades, zoos like San Diego have paired dogs with cheetahs to provide them with comfort and calm, and the Richmond Zoo decided to do the same. They searched for the perfect rescue pup—one with a gentle but fun-loving personality—and found 10-week-old Kago at a high-kill shelter in Alabama.
The introduction was slow and careful, but the bond was instant. From that moment, the two became inseparable. Ten years later, they still don’t seem to notice any differences between them. The zoo summed it up perfectly: “They don’t even seem to recognize their differences in species, size, or color. There is only acceptance. Maybe we, as humans, have some things to learn from these two.”
Kumbali and Kago’s unlikely friendship is more than adorable—it’s a reminder of the simple, pure connections that cross boundaries and bring joy to everyone who witnesses them.
