After her cat gave birth to a single kitten, a Texas woman made a simple but heartfelt decision: she kept the baby so her cat could experience motherhood — and the sweet way the feline has embraced mom life is melting hearts online.

In a viral TikTok shared in December by @gabrielle.nervesa, the tabby cat can be seen snuggling her tiny lookalike, grooming her, and patiently showing her how to be a cat. From cuddles to quiet lessons, the proud mama looks completely content raising her one and only baby.

“Keeping my cat’s kitten from her single litter so she can experience being a mom,” the caption reads. “I think she’s loving the mom life.”

While most cats give birth to litters of four to ten kittens, having just one isn’t unheard of — even if it seems unusual. According to pet experts, there are a few common reasons this can happen.

In some cases, fertilized eggs may not fully develop or implant, resulting in just one kitten being born. Another possibility is a difficult labor, known as dystocia, where other kittens may become stuck or labor is prolonged. Signs can include excessive straining or long pauses without delivery, and a veterinarian should be contacted immediately if this occurs.

There’s also the chance the cat simply isn’t finished giving birth yet. Cats can take up to 24 hours between kittens, so seeing only one early on doesn’t always mean the litter is complete.

Veterinarians note that having a single kitten does not usually signal a health issue on its own, though it’s still important for both mom and baby to be checked by a vet to make sure everything is okay. While a future pregnancy could result in another single-kitten scenario, a full litter is still possible.

The tender mother-daughter bond clearly struck a chord online. The video has racked up more than 6.1 million views and 1.1 million likes, with commenters sharing their own wildly different experiences keeping kittens with their moms.

One viewer joked that keeping all of her cat’s kittens backfired, saying the mom now “yells at them and looks at me like I ruined her life.” Another admitted her once-affectionate cat now prefers motherhood over human attention, adding she’s both happy for her and jealous of a six-month-old kitten. Others shared that their cats adored their babies at first — only to later want absolutely nothing to do with them.

For this mama cat, though, the joy seems to be lasting. Whether it’s the quiet cuddles or the gentle lessons, she looks right at home in her new role — proving that sometimes, one kitten is all it takes to make a cat’s world complete. 🐾💗
