A sick and frightened feral cat who appeared outside a woman’s home begging for help is finally learning what it feels like to be safe, loved and playful.

The stray tomcat began sleeping on the woman’s doormat several months ago. Although he clearly needed assistance, he was still wary of people and reluctant to let anyone get close.

The woman could see that the cat was in poor condition and refused to turn him away simply because he was feral. After several nights of watching him return to her doorstep, she was finally able to trap him and take him to a veterinarian.

The cat tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus, commonly known as FIV, and also needed treatment for several infections. His rescuer brought him home and gave him a new name: Charles.

For the first time in his life, Charles had a warm place to sleep, regular meals and someone determined to care for him.

Sadly, his story soon took another heartbreaking turn when he was diagnosed with cancer. At 9 years old, Charles is also considered a senior cat, making his health battle even more difficult.

Still, his diagnosis has not stopped him from discovering a happier and more playful side of himself.

A recent video showed Charles playing through a closed living room door with another cat in the home named Dennis. The two cats took turns sliding their paws underneath the door and swatting at each other like a pair of mischievous kittens.

The sweet game offered a glimpse of just how much Charles has changed since his days alone outside.

No one knows exactly how much time Charles has left, but he will now spend it surrounded by warmth, affection and a feline friend who brings out his playful side.

After years of surviving on his own, Charles is finally getting the loving home he deserved all along.
