In a heartwarming twist straight out of a nature fairytale, a rescued greater roadrunner named Chappy has decided that freedom isn’t as sweet as home—especially when that home belongs to the woman who saved his life.
Chappy was brought to a Texas wildlife rehabilitation center run by Heather, a licensed caretaker for injured birds. Once he recovered, Heather tried to release him back into the wild. But Chappy had other plans.
“I actually attempted to release him the next morning,” Heather said. “I came out and he was a hood ornament on the front of my car.”
Now a wild bird in every way except his heart, Chappy lives his life outside—hunting and fending for himself—but never fails to return home to Heather every night. Sometimes, he even tap dances on her head to announce his arrival.
Even more charming? He brings her gifts. Every single day.
“He’s a free bird. He hunts on his own, drinks on his own. But he always comes home to mama’s house,” she said.
Heather has dedicated her life to rehabilitating birds in distress, guiding them back to health and, when possible, back to the skies.
“These animals connect with me in a way that I can’t explain,” she said. “We develop some sort of relationship. It’s tears of joy sometimes when I see them fully recovered.”
But some, like Chappy, decide that home isn’t where the wild is. It’s where the love is.
Would you welcome a daily visit from a roadrunner with a heart of gold?
