From their bright blue lakes to their snowy peaks, there’s so much to love about the Rocky Mountains. They’re home to ski resorts, stunning views, and thriving ecosystems, but that doesn’t mean every encounter with nature will be as peaceful as a postcard.

On June 9, Colorado resident Sophia had the surprise of a lifetime when a baby black bear opened the door to her home and let himself inside. This curious cub is a familiar face around her neighborhood, but neither she nor the police knew what to do when he got himself stuck in her house. Poor little guy! He’s definitely scared and unsure of what to do, and he’s completely unaware that he’s giving his new human friends the fright of a lifetime. Fortunately, Sophia and the police officer are being gentle with the wild animal, and the situation eventually resolved itself.

Once the little bear calmed down, he went down some stairs and back out the same door he came in. What a relief! No one was injured during the debacle, though everyone was certainly shaken up.

If you ask us, the even bigger relief is that mama bear didn’t follow inside after her baby! That would have been a very different situation, but luckily, Sophia only had to share her home with the little bear she had already seen from a distance. She knew he didn’t want to hurt anyone—he was just scared!
