Bringing home a second dog — even a temporary foster — can be a big change for everyone in the house. The new arrival doesn’t expect red-carpet treatment, but it’s perfectly normal if your resident pup needs a little time to warm up to their surprise “sibling.”

Dog mom @lindsay.adkinson recently gave the internet the sweetest example of that adjustment period with her two pups: Mugzy, a 2-year-old foster Pug, and Lei, her once-shy rescue who’s still learning to trust. On October 22, Lei found his world turned upside down when Mugzy trotted through the door to stay awhile.

Poor Lei looked a bit unsure at first, and viewers couldn’t help but fall in love with his cautious reaction. The comments were full of encouragement, with many wishing they could reach through the screen to give him a reassuring hug. Luckily, his mom and dad were there to do just that.

Before bringing Mugzy inside, Lindsay made sure the dogs met on neutral ground — the best way to introduce new canine friends. Still, once they got home and the leash came off, Lei retreated to his safe spot. “He ran and hid once we came inside,” Lindsay explained. “He’s a semi-recent rescue with a sad past, so he was just nervous having another dog in his space.”

Lei’s story makes his reaction even more understandable. He and his siblings were rescued from a tough situation just a few months ago. His brother, Tiki, even went viral after being fostered by NYC rescue advocate Isabel Klee, whose videos of his transformation melted hearts everywhere.

Thankfully, Lei didn’t stay nervous for long. Only an hour after Lindsay posted the bittersweet video, he was racing around with the happy zoomies. By the next day, he was playfully begging Mugzy to join in.

Could these two get any cuter? Between Mugzy’s love for his foster dad and his growing friendship with Lei, it’s no wonder fans are already rooting for this to turn into a “foster fail.” Whether Mugzy stays or moves on to his forever home, one thing’s for sure — he’s made a lasting impression on everyone, especially Lei.
