A heart-melting TikTok video is going viral after a pet owner shared how her golden retriever has stepped in to help her senior orange cat who can no longer groom himself.

The clip, posted Tuesday by TikTok user @laurawalker55, shows the dog gently grooming the elderly cat with his tongue while the feline lounges back, clearly enjoying every second of the unexpected care. The caption perfectly sums up the moment: “When your 26-year-old cat can’t groom himself anymore so your dog steps in.”

The sweet interaction instantly struck a chord with viewers, many of whom were moved by the tenderness between the two animals.

Grooming is a vital part of a cat’s daily routine. Cats rely on their rough tongues to remove dirt, loose hair, and shed fur, as well as to manage scent — an instinct rooted in survival. Grooming also helps regulate body temperature, cooling cats through saliva evaporation when they’re hot and stimulating blood flow to warm them when they’re cold. For many cats, it’s also a soothing behavior tied to comfort and stress relief.

As cats age or face health challenges, grooming can become difficult or even impossible. While a cat’s saliva has mild antibacterial properties that can help soothe sore spots, excessive or incomplete grooming can lead to skin irritation, hair loss, and other issues.

When a cat can no longer groom itself, owners often need to step in. Experts recommend waiting until the cat is calm and initiating contact on the animal’s terms. Letting the cat sniff and rub against the brush first helps build comfort, followed by gentle strokes along the head, cheeks, shoulders, and back — always avoiding sensitive areas like the stomach. Grooming sessions should be kept short and stopped immediately if signs of stress appear, such as tail swishing, flattened ears, freezing, hissing, or growling.

In this case, though, the aging cat seems to have found the perfect solution — a devoted dog who’s more than happy to help.

The video has already racked up more than 21,500 views and nearly 2,700 likes, with commenters flooding the post with emotional reactions.

“The most precious love!” one user wrote.

“This is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen,” another commented.

Others focused on the elderly cat, praising him and wishing him many more happy years surrounded by love.
