Out on 160 acres of open land in southeast Oregon, Hammer Ranch is home to plenty of cattle — and apparently, the occasional baby mix-up.

The first-generation ranch, owned by Derek Hammer, recently had several cows expecting calves at the same time. So it wasn’t unusual for Derek to head out to check on the herd and find newborns.

What he didn’t expect? Two brand-new mama cows arguing over which calf belonged to whom.

In a now-viral clip, Derek comes across the two cows, each having just given birth. The only problem is that both moms seem convinced the same calf is theirs. Meanwhile, the other baby is left standing there like the odd one out.

With calm confidence — and a running commentary that had viewers laughing — Derek steps in to sort things out. He makes an educated guess about which calf matches which mom and gently guides them back together.

At the end of the video, he jokes, “Hopefully I picked the right one to go with the right one…”

Honestly? We’re rooting for him.

TikTok commenters had a field day with the situation.

“Did we just witness an episode of Switched at Birth?!” one person joked, earning thousands of likes.

Another imagined what one of the cows might be thinking: “This isn’t my baby, but… ok.”

And when Derek casually tells one of the cows to “go somewhere with it,” viewers couldn’t stop laughing.

Life on a ranch may be full of wide-open spaces and peaceful fields — but apparently, even cows can have a little postpartum confusion. Thankfully, Derek was there to play referee in this very moo-ving case of mistaken identity.
