A black cat owner had the internet howling after realizing they’d been talking to… a bag.
In a now-viral TikTok posted by @nuggetandnimbus, a pet parent from Copenhagen, Denmark, captures the exact moment they discover the “black cat” sitting on the floor isn’t their cat at all.
In the clip, a dark shape is seen resting on the ground. Naturally, the owner assumes it’s Nimbus, their sleek black feline. They casually talk to it — completely unaware that the object in question is actually just a black bag.
Meanwhile, the real Nimbus?
He’s not hiding in a shadowy corner or blending into the floor.
He’s lounging comfortably on a beige couch right beside them — very visible and very much not on the floor.
The on-screen caption says it all: “My black cat watching me talk to a black bag I thought was him.”

Since being posted on Jan. 24, the video has exploded online, racking up more than 2 million views and hundreds of thousands of likes. And if you’ve ever owned a black cat, you already know why.
The owner even joked in the caption that this kind of mix-up “happens daily.”
Black cats are famous for their ability to blend into dark furniture, clothing, and even random household items. According to pet experts, their deep color comes from high levels of melanin pigment — but their personalities are no different from any other cat. It’s just their stealth mode that keeps humans guessing.
TikTok users flooded the comments with their own embarrassing cases of mistaken identity.
“I once had a lovely chat with my Ugg boots. My cat was downstairs,” one person wrote.
Another shared, “I went to grab a sock under the bed and it was my cat.”
“Omg I do this all the time! Except I’m talking to my black boots,” someone else admitted.
And one commenter perfectly captured Nimbus’ likely reaction: “Cat’s like—really mom…”
As Nimbus calmly observed the situation from his couch throne, he seemed to embody the true spirit of black cat energy — mysterious, amused, and slightly judging.
