Most dog parents panic the moment they catch their pup digging up the yard—but one German Shepherd owner turned the habit into something hilarious.

Meet Tommy, a hardworking (and very vocal) German Shepherd who absolutely loves digging holes. Instead of trying to stop him, his dad decided to lean into it—and the result is pure internet gold.

In the now-viral video, Tommy starts off by carefully supervising his dad’s progress, like a true foreman. Then comes the moment he’s been waiting for—his cue to jump in and take over.

And that’s when things get really funny.

Tommy doesn’t just dig… he sings while he works.

As soon as he starts going to town on the dirt, he lets out a series of dramatic, almost musical howls that sound like he’s performing his own personal soundtrack. It’s the kind of unexpected moment that instantly puts a smile on your face.

According to his family, this isn’t a one-time thing either.

“Digging is such a natural behavior in dogs, and instead of correcting it, we put it on cue,” they explained in the caption. “It comes in truly handy sometimes! Tommy even sings his own songs when digging—we are so lucky to have him around!”

Honestly, it’s kind of genius.

Rather than fighting a natural instinct, they turned it into a fun activity—and even something useful. Dog experts often say digging is completely normal behavior, and with a little training, it can be redirected in positive ways. You can even teach dogs to “dig” indoors using blankets and hidden treats.

But Tommy might be taking it to the next level.

The internet certainly thinks so. Viewers flooded the comments with jokes about his work ethic and nonstop “singing.”

“He yaps a lot but gets the job done,” one person wrote.

Another joked, “‘Dig, dig!’ Tommy: ‘I’m going as fast as I CAN!!!!’”

And one commenter summed it up perfectly: “What does it look like I’m doing?!”

German Shepherds are known for being hardworking, loyal, and a little dramatic—and Tommy seems to check every box.

Safe to say, this is one yard project no one’s complaining about.
