What started as a normal run along the water turned into a terrifying life-or-death moment for one Boston man and his dog.

Hans Nagrath says he didn’t hesitate when his 2-year-old Goldendoodle, Benny, suddenly bolted into the Charles River—forcing him to jump in after him during one of the busiest days in the city.

The scary incident happened on April 20, the same day as the Boston Marathon, when crowds were already gathered nearby.

According to Nagrath, Benny had been off-leash when he spotted two geese and took off running straight into the river. Despite yelling for him to come back, the dog didn’t turn around.

“I was just picturing Benny drowning, and I just didn’t think,” Nagrath said.

Without hesitation, he jumped into the water—but quickly realized how dangerous the situation really was.

The river was around 40 degrees, and within moments, the cold began taking a toll. Nagrath said he started losing feeling in his arms as he struggled to stay afloat.

“I was about 10 feet from Benny when I was like, ‘Oh God, I can’t move my arms, and I don’t know what’s going to happen,’” he recalled.

Running out of strength, he couldn’t grab Benny the usual way. Instead, he pushed the dog ahead of him, slowly guiding him toward shore. At one point, when Benny began to sink, Nagrath lifted him by his hind legs to keep him above water.

Somehow, both made it back to land.

People nearby rushed to help, wrapping Benny in a Boston Marathon blanket as the shaken pair recovered from the ordeal.

Looking back, Nagrath said there was a moment when he realized just how serious things had become.

“I need help here,” he remembered thinking, scanning the area for boats or anyone who could assist—but none were nearby.

Despite the terrifying experience, both he and Benny walked away without injuries. And in true dog fashion, Benny was apparently ready to chase geese again on the way home—something Nagrath says won’t be happening anytime soon.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more scared in my life,” he said. “I actually thought I was going to drown.”

Still, he made one thing clear—he’d do it all over again for his dog.

  1. Too many people just “have” dogs and NEVER teach them to respond to commands, the same way they raise their kids; and this is the result!
