Move over, San Francisco sea lions—there’s a new heavyweight stealing the show, and the internet is obsessed.
Meet “Chonkers,” a massive Steller sea lion who recently showed up at Pier 39 and instantly became a viral sensation.
This guy isn’t just big—he’s enormous.
Weighing in at around 2,000 pounds and towering over the nearby California sea lions, Chonkers is roughly three times their size. And when he flops onto the dock? Witnesses say it sounds like “an oak tree falling.”
Yeah… he makes an entrance.
Chonkers reportedly arrived sometime in March and wasted no time claiming his spot among the crowded docks. Videos shared online show the giant sea lion lounging solo while smaller sea lions keep their distance—like they know who’s in charge.
In one viral clip, Chonkers launches himself out of the water and onto a dock packed with other sea lions. The reaction? Pure chaos. Most of them scatter instantly, leaving the massive newcomer to take over like he owns the place.

The nickname “Chonkers” came from social media, where stunned locals couldn’t believe the size of the unexpected visitor.
And here’s the wild part—he’s not even the biggest of his kind.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, male Steller sea lions can grow up to 11 feet long and weigh as much as 2,500 pounds. Still, Chonkers stands out thanks to his lighter fur and sheer presence compared to the darker, smaller California sea lions around him.
Experts say it’s unusual to see a Steller sea lion hanging out in San Francisco for long. They’re typically found farther north, around Washington and Alaska. But with plenty of food in the bay right now, Chonkers may have just decided to stick around.
Harbor officials say the giant guest has been surprisingly chill so far, especially around busy boating areas. While staff can usually guide smaller sea lions when needed, they admit they don’t exactly have a game plan if Chonkers decides to go wherever he wants.
For now, though, he seems content ruling his floating kingdom.
And honestly? No one’s trying to argue with a 2,000-pound sea lion named Chonkers.
