A starving mama dog was so weak she could barely walk, but she was still doing everything she could to protect her puppies.
Animal rescuer Audrey Freeman recently came across the heartbreaking scene in her community. On a lonely dirt road, she found a black dog, later named Arya, curled up with her litter of puppies after they had apparently been abandoned and left to survive on their own.
Arya was in terrible shape.
She was so hungry and exhausted from caring for her babies that she stumbled when she tried to walk. Her body was thin, her strength was fading, and it was clear she had been fighting to keep her puppies alive with almost nothing left to give.
Audrey could not leave them there.
She gave the little family food and said it looked like they had not eaten in days. Then she loaded Arya and her puppies into her vehicle and brought them home, giving them the safety, food and care they desperately needed.
The rescue has left animal lovers emotional, especially after Audrey shared just how badly the situation affected her.
“I am tired,” she wrote in the caption.
Audrey said she was mentally, physically and emotionally drained from seeing so many animals abandoned and left to suffer.
“Tired of cleaning up the mess cruel people leave behind,” she wrote. “Tired of seeing dogs dumped like trash. Tired of watching starving mothers try to keep their babies alive with nothing left in their own bodies.”
She said Arya’s condition completely broke her heart.
“This mama has absolutely shattered me,” Audrey wrote.

According to Audrey, Arya was “nothing but skin and bones” and so weak she stumbled while walking. Still, despite everything she had endured, the mama dog remained gentle and sweet.
Audrey said one moment especially brought her to tears. After being fed, Arya carried around a paper plate like it was something precious.
“She truly didn’t know if another meal would come,” Audrey wrote. “Think about that for a second. A dog so hungry, so used to surviving, that even an empty plate felt important to her.”
Audrey also questioned how anyone could abandon a mother dog and her puppies in such a vulnerable condition.
“How do people do this?” she wrote. “How do you dump them and drive away? How do you sleep at night knowing this mama was out there starving while trying to feed her babies?”
Thankfully, Arya and her puppies are now safe.
After Audrey shared their story and her contact information, people online stepped up with donations and support to help care for the little family while they recover and wait for forever homes.
It is the kind of rescue story that hurts to read at first, but ends with hope.
Arya was found weak, starving and scared on the side of a dirt road. But because one person stopped to help, she and her puppies now have food, warmth, safety and a real chance at a new life.
