Nearly 80 ragdoll cats and kittens are recovering after being rescued from a Pennsylvania home where officials say they were found living in filthy and dangerous conditions.
The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said its animal law enforcement team worked with Lancaster Township Police to remove 78 cats from a home in Lancaster County on Tuesday, June 9.
The fluffy, blue-eyed cats were reportedly found hidden throughout the residence in conditions rescuers described as difficult to comprehend.
When officers entered the home, they were met with extreme heat, dangerously high ammonia levels, and rooms filled with waste, debris, and trash stacked from floor to ceiling, according to the PSPCA.
“The air was harsh, but officers spent hours working through those physically demanding conditions to ensure every animal could be found and brought to safety,” the organization said.
Rescuers eventually removed every cat from the property.
Some of the ragdolls were frightened. Others were sick. But all of them, the PSPCA said, had been living in conditions no animal should ever have to endure.
The cats and kittens were taken in for forensic exams, medical care, clean bedding, nutritious food, and something many of them may not have felt in a long time: relief.
Photos shared after the rescue show the white-and-black, blue-eyed cats cuddled up safely inside what appears to be an animal care facility.
It is not yet clear whether the homeowner will face charges.
In an update on Sunday, June 14, the PSPCA said some of the rescued adult cats would be available for adoption starting Monday, June 15.
The kittens are not ready for adoption yet because they are still too young.
However, the organization said many of the adult cats are ready to find patient and loving homes.
“While they are still nervous and adjusting to their new surroundings, we know that with patient, understanding adopters, they will gain confidence and blossom into wonderful kitties,” the PSPCA said.
For now, the 78 rescued ragdolls are finally safe, clean, and getting a chance at the kind of life they should have had all along.
