Every baker knows one of the best parts of making a cake happens before it ever reaches the oven.
A little taste of batter from the spoon. A quick lick from the beater. Maybe one final swipe around the mixing bowl just to make sure nothing goes to waste.
But one Golden Retriever named Sunny decided she was not waiting for permission.
In a hilarious Instagram Reel shared by @theretriever.family, Sunny spots her chance while her mom is pouring cake batter from a mixing bowl into a pan. With the camera set up on the counter, the sneaky pup appears out of nowhere and makes her move.
In one bold leap, Sunny jumps up to the counter and takes a huge bite straight from the stream of batter before her mom can stop her.
Her mom quickly grabs her and pulls her away, but the damage is already done. Sunny got her mouthful, and judging by the video, she had absolutely no regrets.
The on-screen text says it all: “Sunny saw the cake batter and made a choice.”
The caption was even better: “no regrets tho.”

Viewers loved Sunny’s fearless kitchen ambush and quickly filled the comments with jokes about the dog’s bold decision-making.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, – Sunny, (probably),” one person wrote.
Another joked, “Not a single ounce of hesitation. He carpe diem’ed that dough.”
A third viewer summed up Sunny’s mindset perfectly, writing, “Dog said, it’s all or nothing.”
While the video had plenty of people laughing, others were more concerned about what happened after Sunny’s batter heist. Some commenters wondered whether cake batter could make a dog sick, while others guessed the sneaky pup may have earned herself a trip to the vet.
A tiny lick of plain cake batter may not always cause a major problem, but it is not something dogs should be allowed to eat regularly. Raw batter can contain uncooked eggs and flour, which may carry harmful bacteria. Some baked goods can also include ingredients that are dangerous or toxic to dogs, including chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts and xylitol.
For pet parents with a food thief like Sunny, the lesson is pretty simple: keep baking supplies out of reach, watch those counter edges and never underestimate how fast a determined Golden Retriever can move when cake is involved.
Sunny may not have waited for dessert, but she definitely gave the internet a moment worth laughing about.
