Foxy the dog is now enjoying motherhood in comfort, a dramatic change from the heartbreaking conditions she endured while pregnant.
The 4-year-old German shepherd was one of more than 80 animals discovered in what Alaqua Animal Refuge described as a “severe cruelty situation” in rural Florida.
When rescuers found Foxy, she was heavily pregnant, chained inside a dirt pen and standing in filth that reached her ankles. She was also covered in fleas.
Alaqua Animal Refuge, based in Freeport, Florida, stepped in after the animals’ owner was arrested. In total, 85 animals were signed over to the nonprofit and removed from the property.
Laurie Hood, the founder of Alaqua, said the conditions were among the worst she had ever witnessed during more than two decades of animal welfare work.
“This was one of the worst cases I have seen in my 20-plus years of animal welfare work,” Hood told PEOPLE.
She said the animals were living among filth, feces and animal remains. Several were severely malnourished and needed immediate medical treatment, including Foxy.
After arriving at the refuge, Foxy was treated to a much-needed spa day that included grooming, pampering and a full medical examination.
She then continued her recovery inside Alaqua’s maternity suite, where staff closely monitored her health, made sure she received proper nutrition and veterinary care, and prepared a quiet, comfortable space where she could give birth without stress.
Just a few days after arriving, Foxy delivered eight healthy puppies.
“It was as though she had been holding on until she finally felt safe,” Hood said.
Once the puppies arrived, Foxy quickly settled into motherhood and began caring for them with confidence.
“Watching her transform from a neglected dog living on a chain into a confident, nurturing mother was incredibly emotional for our team,” Hood said.
As Foxy realized she no longer had to fight for survival, her personality began to shine. She relaxed, gained weight and started enjoying life again.
Alaqua gave the puppies Looney Tunes-inspired names, including Yosemite Sam, Sylvester the Cat, Porky Pig, Petunia Pig, Miss Prissy, Melissa Duck, Lola Bunny, Foghorn Leghorn and Elmer Fudd.
The entire family has since moved from the refuge’s maternity suite into a foster home, where Foxy and her puppies have more room to play, explore and grow.
Foxy and all of her puppies are expected to become available for adoption in a few weeks, once the puppies have been weaned and fully examined by veterinarians.
Despite the neglect she endured, Foxy has remained gentle, affectionate and trusting around people.
“She is attentive, gentle, and incredibly patient with her puppies,” Hood said. “What stands out most is her resilience.”
Hood described Foxy as sweet-natured, intelligent and eager for human connection.
“She seems grateful for every kindness she receives,” she added.
Thanks to Foxy’s strength and the work of Alaqua Animal Refuge, both she and her puppies are now healthy and thriving.
“Foxy’s story is a powerful reminder that neglect does not define an animal’s future,” Hood said. “Given compassion, medical care, and a second chance, they can heal in ways that are truly remarkable.”
She added that Foxy’s happy ending was only possible because people stepped in and worked together.
“Every animal deserves that opportunity,” Hood said.
