An Ohio man who feared he might never see his beloved dog again got the surprise of a lifetime after a random Facebook photo helped bring them back together eight months later.

Dylan Reedy had raised his hound mix, Timber, since the pup was just five weeks old. But in late November 2025, Reedy came home and discovered Timber had somehow vanished.

He had no idea how the dog got out.

Days of searching turned into weeks, and then months. With no solid leads, Reedy was beginning to fear the worst.

What he didn’t know was that Timber had actually been found almost immediately.

On Nov. 28, just one day after he disappeared, Timber was brought to Animal Friends Humane Society as a stray. The shelter was nearly 90 minutes away from Reedy’s home, making the chances of the two finding each other even slimmer.

Timber arrived with a serious cut on his leg, but shelter workers said the sweet dog patiently allowed them to treat his injury.

Staff renamed him Flash and, after his required stray hold ended, sent him to a foster home where he could get extra care while his leg healed.

About a month later, he returned to the shelter.

Then came the long wait.

For roughly 220 days, Timber lived in the same kennel as family after family passed him by.

Shelter workers and volunteers made sure he still had plenty of attention. He went on walks, enjoyed playdates with other dogs, soaked up belly rubs and greeted visitors with his distinctive black spots and constantly wagging little tail.

“People would stop at his kennel, tell him how handsome he was, slip him a treat, and then head home with another dog,” the shelter recalled.

But Timber apparently wasn’t waiting for just anyone.

His incredible break finally came when one of the shelter’s longtime supporters, a man named Ferg, stopped by to make a donation.

As staff often did, they brought one of the shelter dogs into a photo with him. This time, that dog happened to be Timber.

Ferg later shared the picture on social media.

That seemingly ordinary Facebook post changed everything.

Reedy’s girlfriend saw the image and immediately thought the dog looked familiar.

“I think the dog in that photo is my missing dog,” she reportedly messaged Ferg.

A meeting was quickly arranged at the shelter, with Ferg joining Reedy for what everyone hoped would be the reunion they had been waiting for.

There was little doubt once Timber spotted his owner.

“The second Timber saw his dad, that little nub tail was wagging a hundred miles an minute,” the shelter said.

The emotional reunion included happy tears, excited kisses and plenty of tail wagging as Timber finally realized his long wait was over.

After approximately eight months apart — and around 250 days in the shelter system — Timber was going home with the man who had raised him.

The shelter said the ending suddenly made all those months of waiting make sense.

“Now we know why Timber spent 250 days with us,” the shelter wrote. “He wasn’t waiting to be adopted. He was waiting to be reunited with his family.”
