An Ohio state trooper making a routine stop along a busy interstate came across a heartbreaking sight: a puppy abandoned inside a metal crate on the side of the road.
Trooper John Kronander was checking a rest area along I-71 in Medina County on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 23, when he spotted the gray-and-white pit bull inside the crate, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The puppy was discovered around 8 a.m. and had no food or water, officials said.
Bodycam footage shared by the highway patrol shows Kronander approaching the frightened pup and immediately trying to comfort him.
“We’ll get you out of here, okay? Someone left you? It’s okay,” Kronander tells the dog.

The trooper then opened the crate and let the puppy out.
Despite being abandoned, the little dog quickly warmed up to him.
Kronander even grabbed a plastic bottle and used it as a makeshift toy while the puppy pawed at it and wagged his tail.
“How long you been here? You pawing me? Oh my gosh,” Kronander says in the footage. “Are you pawing me?”
After a little playing and wrestling, Kronander prepared to move the puppy into his patrol car.
“Will you get mad if I pick you up? Will you get upset with me? Okay, here you go,” he tells the dog.
He then gently carried the pup to the passenger seat.
“Here you go. Sit right down there for me. Perfect!”
The puppy was safely taken to the Medina Post before being transferred to the Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol later praised Kronander for his “quick action and compassion.”
Sgt. Jeremy Kindler told News 5 Cleveland that he wasn’t sure whether Kronander had a dog of his own, but said the trooper’s instincts as a father were obvious.
“I know that he’s a father of his own, so, you know, traditionally, when you’re taking care of a puppy, it’s like taking care of a little kid,” Kindler said. “So, his fatherly instincts came out.”
The Medina County SPCA also spoke out about the disturbing case the same day the puppy was rescued.
“Someone made the conscious decision to leave this puppy behind in a crate along a busy interstate, putting this little life at tremendous risk,” the organization said.
“This puppy was completely dependent on someone to provide for their safety and well-being. Instead, they were simply left there.”
The shelter said it was still unclear when the puppy would be available for adoption.
Officials are also trying to figure out who abandoned the dog and are asking the public for help.

“Even the smallest piece of information could help us determine what happened to this puppy and hold the person responsible accountable,” the SPCA said.
For now, the puppy is safe thanks to a routine highway check that turned into a rescue.
