For any dog parent, few things are more frightening than realizing your best friend has disappeared.
That nightmare became reality for the family of Koda, a tiny senior Pomeranian who vanished on Aug. 25 and remained missing for more than three weeks.
By the time Koda finally turned up at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, the little dog had clearly been through a lot.
Shelter staff said Koda arrived as a stray in rough condition. His once-fluffy coat was severely matted, with sticks, thorns and other debris tangled deep inside his fur. He was also extremely underweight.
But almost immediately, shelter workers found one very important clue.
Koda had a microchip.
Staff scanned the chip, located his owner’s information and made the phone call every family with a missing pet dreams of receiving.
In a video shared by the shelter, a staff member can be seen holding tiny Koda while calling the number associated with his chip.
“Do you have a dog named Koda?” she asks.
The voice on the other end immediately becomes emotional.
“Yes,” his owner replies, explaining that Koda had been missing since Aug. 25.
That was when the shelter worker got to deliver the incredible news: Koda was safe.
After weeks of searching and wondering what had happened to him, his family finally knew their little dog was coming home.
Before the reunion could happen, however, Koda needed some serious TLC.
The mats in his fur had become so severe that they were pulling painfully against his skin. The Humane Society said its veterinary team sedated him so they could carefully shave the tangled coat away and make him more comfortable.
Once the fur was removed, it became even clearer just how thin the senior dog had become during his time away from home.
Still, Koda was finally somewhere safe, surrounded by people who could give him food, medical care and plenty of affection while his family prepared to bring him home.
Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.
On Sept. 15, after weeks away, Koda was reunited with his family. The shelter shared a glimpse of the emotional reunion the following day and admitted the moment got to staff, too.

Viewers had much the same reaction.
“I have tears,” one person wrote after watching the reunion.
Another simply admitted, “Already crying.”
Koda’s story also came with an important reminder for pet parents.
Without his registered microchip, the shelter said staff might never have known exactly where the little Pomeranian belonged.
Microchips contain an identification number that shelters and veterinary clinics can scan and use to locate an owner’s registered contact information. Unlike a collar or tag, the chip stays beneath the pet’s skin and cannot simply fall off while an animal is lost.
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City encourages owners to microchip their pets and, just as importantly, keep the registration information up to date. Its own affordable-care clinic offers microchipping services as part of its veterinary programs.
Koda may have returned home looking very different from the fluffy little Pomeranian who disappeared weeks earlier, but the most important thing was that he made it back.
After more than three frightening weeks apart, one tiny microchip helped turn a missing-dog nightmare into the happiest possible ending.
