Hugo the Golden Retriever thought he was about to enjoy one of his favorite kinds of outings — a visit filled with friendly faces, treats and belly rubs.
Unfortunately for Hugo, his humans apparently forgot to mention one tiny detail.
He was actually at the vet.
The hilarious bait-and-switch was shared by the popular @maui_thegoldenpup account, which follows Golden Retrievers Maui and Hugo along with their Corgi sibling, Ruby. Hugo is the younger Golden of the bunch, and his reaction to realizing what was really happening has dog lovers cracking up.
At first, everything seemed perfect.
Hugo happily greeted staff members at the front desk, soaking up attention, treats and plenty of affection. For several minutes, he appeared completely convinced that this was nothing more than a social call.
Then the ear camera came out.
That was apparently the moment Hugo realized he had been tricked.
His expression quickly changed from cheerful and trusting to deeply suspicious as the exam got underway. The poor pup even turned toward his older Golden Retriever sibling, Maui, as though he was hoping for a little moral support.

Maui, however, was apparently not volunteering for rescue duty.
The video shows Hugo looking increasingly unsure about the entire situation as the veterinary staff continued examining him. By the end, the friendly visit he thought he was getting had turned into a very real appointment.
PetHelpful described the clip as a vet visit that definitely did not go the way Hugo expected, noting that he had spent the first few minutes happily enjoying treats and belly rubs before realizing what was actually happening.
Hugo’s dramatic reaction also fits perfectly with the personality fans have come to know online.
Maui and Hugo have previously gone viral for being almost complete opposites. Maui, now a senior Golden Retriever, tends to be the calmer older brother, while Hugo has brought plenty of younger-dog energy into the household.
Viewers couldn’t help but sympathize with Hugo’s feeling of betrayal.
“My pup loves the vets, but hates the vet,” one commenter joked.
Another compared the experience to a child going to the dentist expecting a toy afterward.
And one viewer summed up the entire clip perfectly: “Poor Hugo.”
Fortunately, Hugo’s terrible day at the vet still came with plenty of treats, attention and people who clearly adore him.
And knowing Golden Retrievers, there’s a pretty good chance he’ll forgive everyone involved.
He just might inspect the room a little more carefully the next time someone promises he’s only stopping by to say hello.
