A Colorado police dog is being hailed as a hero after helping rescuers find three young children who wandered away from their family’s campsite and disappeared into the wilderness.

The frightening situation unfolded Saturday near the Midland Bike Trail, east of Buena Vista, Colorado.

The children — one 9-year-old and two 6-year-olds — were camping with a large group of relatives visiting from the Denver area.

Around 9 a.m., family members realized all three children were missing.

They immediately began searching the surrounding area themselves, but after about two hours with no sign of the kids, the increasingly worried family called for help.

That triggered a major search operation.

Chaffee County Search and Rescue teams headed into the area while multiple drones and a helicopter were launched overhead. Foot teams also began combing the rugged terrain in organized search patterns.

Then one four-legged member of the team got to work.

Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Archie, affectionately known as “Arch,” was brought to the campsite and almost immediately picked up a scent.

Arch began following the trail away from camp and into the wilderness.

His nose soon gave search teams an important clue about which direction the children had traveled.

Rescuers were able to move to higher ground along the route Arch was indicating and eventually spotted the missing children.

By that point, the trio had wandered approximately 1.5 miles from their family’s campsite.

Fortunately, all three were found unharmed and in good health.

They were reunited with their understandably relieved family around 2 p.m., roughly five hours after relatives first realized they were gone.

Sheriff Andy Rohrich praised the speed and teamwork of everyone involved in the rescue.

He said he could only imagine the fear the children’s family experienced while waiting for news.

The sheriff also credited the county’s volunteer search-and-rescue crews and their newest canine helper.

Arch’s role highlights exactly why trained search dogs can be so valuable during missing-person emergencies.

A dog’s sense of smell is dramatically more sensitive than a human’s, allowing trained K-9s to follow scent trails that people may never detect.

In wilderness areas filled with trees, uneven terrain and countless possible directions to travel, that ability can give rescuers an enormous advantage.

In this case, Arch helped point teams toward three little campers who had made it much farther from home base than their family probably ever imagined.

What began as every parent’s nightmare thankfully ended with three children safe, one relieved family and a very good dog deserving plenty of extra treats.
