Three tiny puppies abandoned along a Texas roadside had no idea when help might arrive, but they apparently knew one thing: they weren’t leaving each other behind.
When animal rescuer Stephanie Hassell and her daughter spotted the frightened little dogs near a busy road in Cherokee County, they immediately stopped to investigate. What started as a rescue of two puppies quickly became something even more heartbreaking when they discovered a third baby nearby who desperately needed help.
Stephanie, who runs Bella’s Heart Dog Rescue, was driving to pick up another daughter from work when she noticed what appeared to be several small animals dangerously close to passing traffic. After pulling over, she found two scared puppies huddled near the roadside, seemingly reluctant to leave the area.
As she and her daughter worked to bring the little ones to safety, Stephanie heard whimpering coming from the nearby woods. Following the sound, she discovered another puppy trapped beneath a log, unable to get himself out.
The poor baby was injured, and it soon became clear why his siblings had remained so close. Although no one knows exactly what happened before the puppies were found, the sight of the little family staying together touched the hearts of animal lovers who later watched their rescue story online.

Stephanie and her daughter carefully gathered all three puppies, making sure none had been overlooked before leaving the area. After an uncertain beginning, the adorable trio was finally headed somewhere safe, where warm beds, regular meals and plenty of cuddles would replace their frightening roadside ordeal.
But their rescue was only the beginning.
Once the puppies received veterinary attention, Stephanie learned that the injured little boy had broken both of his legs and would need surgery. Thankfully, his two siblings were doing much better, and all three were finally receiving the care and affection they deserved.
Stephanie gave the puppies names worthy of their fighting spirits: Cassian, Azriel and Rhysand, inspired by the beloved characters from Sarah J. Maas’s popular fantasy series “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” The injured puppy, Azriel, would have the toughest road ahead, but at least he wouldn’t have to face it alone.
As their story spread across social media, viewers couldn’t get over the puppies’ loyalty to one another. One commenter admitted they would have been terrified of accidentally leaving a puppy behind, while another was especially moved by how the little dogs had stayed together.
And really, how could anyone resist those sweet faces?
Despite everything they’d been through, the puppies began settling into their new surroundings, enjoying the comfort of being safe and cared for. Stephanie also received support from generous animal lovers who wanted to help cover food, veterinary expenses and Azriel’s medical treatment.
For a small rescue like Bella’s Heart, taking in three unexpected puppies, especially one requiring extensive medical care, is no small undertaking. But Stephanie was determined to give each of them the best possible chance at a happy future.
The rescue has since shared encouraging updates about the trio, although Azriel’s recovery and the puppies’ remaining veterinary needs mean their journey isn’t quite finished. Plans have also been discussed to transfer them to another rescue in Maine once they’re ready, where they can continue toward finding permanent families.
For now, the three little survivors have something far more important than an adoption date: they’re safe, they’re loved, and they no longer have to wonder whether someone will come to help.
Their story is a touching reminder that sometimes the smallest animals have the biggest hearts. Cassian, Rhysand and brave little Azriel may have started their journey on the side of a lonely road, but thanks to a mother and daughter who refused to drive past, their next chapter is already looking much brighter.
And after sticking together through so much, these three sweethearts deserve every belly rub, cozy blanket and happy tail wag waiting for them.
