A morning run turned into an unexpected rescue mission when a California woman spotted a lonely German Shepherd tied to a trash can with a heartbreaking sign that simply read “Free Dog.”
Marathon runner Maddy Auerbacher was jogging through Carlsbad earlier this month when she noticed the handsome pup sitting beside a bag of dog food, apparently left behind for anyone willing to take him.
But despite his sad circumstances, the sweet dog had nothing but love to give.
Rather than continue her run, Maddy stopped to help the abandoned Shepherd, who seemed delighted to finally have someone paying attention to him. The friendly pup greeted his unexpected rescuer with the kind of warmth that makes it hard to imagine anyone leaving him behind.
Knowing she couldn’t simply take a large dog home in the middle of her workout, Maddy contacted the Carlsbad Police Department to make sure he received the care he needed.
Officers responded and stayed with the dog until animal welfare personnel arrived to take him to safety. And just like that, the lonely pup’s story began taking a much happier turn.

Naturally, viewers were touched by the rescue, with many wishing they could have been the ones to discover the adorable Shepherd.
“Listen, if I stumble upon a sign that says free dog, the dog is mine, and we’re gonna live our best lives,” one commenter joked.
And honestly, who could blame them? Just look at that sweet face!
Fortunately, the rescue came with another wonderful surprise. The San Diego Humane Society later confirmed that the dog, now known as Sam, was receiving care at its Oceanside campus.
“Thank you for looking out for him!” the organization wrote, announcing that Sam was available for adoption.
Even better, someone who works at the shelter shared an update that melted viewers’ hearts.
“I work here, and the sweet boy is doing amazing,” the employee commented, posting a picture of Sam enjoying some time outside in the play yard.
And if his adoption profile is any indication, this handsome boy has an absolutely wonderful personality.
The shelter describes Sam as a happy-go-lucky pup who greets new friends with a big smile, an enthusiastically wagging tail and an endless appetite for affection.
After everything he’s been through, it’s especially heartwarming to see that Sam hasn’t lost his love for people.
He may have been left beside a trash can with a sign suggesting anyone could take him, but he’s clearly worth so much more than that.
Thanks to one observant runner, some caring police officers and a dedicated shelter team, Sam now has another opportunity to find a family who will cherish him.
Here’s hoping his next adventure ends with a cozy bed, plenty of treats and someone who never lets him feel unwanted again!
