Most pets thrive on routine, and ducks are no exception. So when Lauren Allen, known on Instagram as @trying_to_homestead, decided to give her feathered crew a home makeover, she didn’t expect quite the reaction she got. In what she jokingly called “traumatizing” her ducks, Lauren built them a brand-new house and even upgraded their pool. But instead of diving right in, her ducks gave the new setup some serious side-eye.
Determined to win them over, Lauren came up with a clever plan. She brought out their favorite treat—chunks of pumpkin, gooey insides and all—hoping it would coax them into their fancy new pool. But when she stepped outside, she got a surprise of her own: the ducks had already jumped in and were happily splashing around without any encouragement at all!

Lauren’s caption summed it up perfectly: “My precious idiots… I’m so glad they’re getting more comfortable in their new home! They finally have an actual house and a pool (which I’ll have to share more about later), and I was hoping all they needed was some time to get happy. Despite the general dumbness and mess, I love having ducks!” We couldn’t agree more—it’s impossible not to love these quirky little swimmers.
It’s no surprise the pool became a hit. According to Ducks of Providence, water isn’t just for fun—it’s essential. In the wild, ponds, lakes, and rivers are where ducks find food, socialize, and even choose mates. Water also helps them stay healthy by allowing them to preen, cleaning and oiling their feathers to keep them waterproof and safe from predators.
For anyone thinking about keeping ducks, you don’t need a giant pond. Even a small pool like Lauren’s can make your ducks incredibly happy—and maybe even give you a few funny moments to share online.
