An 18-year-old’s vacation turned into a life-changing rescue story after a chance encounter with a stray dog in Hawaii that would ultimately steal her heart—and find a forever home.
Keira Alexandrian, from Los Angeles, was just 17 when she first spotted the dog during a family trip to Oahu last October. What started as a fleeting moment at a boat harbor quickly became something she couldn’t walk away from.
“I noticed her early in the morning when we were heading out to swim with dolphins,” Alexandrian told Newsweek. “She came right up to me, covered in ticks and this black tar-like substance that actually stained my hands.”
Despite the heartbreaking condition the dog was in, Alexandrian had to leave her behind to make the boat tour. When she returned, the dog was gone.
“I was really sad,” she said.
But the story didn’t end there.
Later that night, while out at dinner about 20 minutes away, Alexandrian couldn’t shake the feeling. She begged her mom to go back—and unbelievably, the dog was sitting in the exact same spot, as if she had been waiting.
The family soon learned the dog had likely been dumped as a puppy and had been surviving on her own ever since.
For Alexandrian and her family—who run a nonprofit animal rescue—there was no question. They weren’t leaving her behind again.
Still, they weren’t entirely sure if they would keep her.
“We didn’t know how she’d get along with our dogs back home,” Alexandrian said. “But we knew she’d be safe no matter what. I just really hoped she’d stay with us.”
That hope quickly turned into reality.
The family canceled their plans, scooped the dog up, and even snuck her into their hotel, where they gave her a much-needed bath and a soft place to sleep—possibly her first ever.
They took her to the vet and, following protocol, temporarily released her to a shelter in case an owner came forward. But when no one did, they extended their trip, picked her up days later, and moved into a pet-friendly hotel while preparing to bring her home.

Now named Kona, the once-abandoned dog spent her days exploring Hawaii with her new family—going on walks, playing in parks, and slowly learning what love felt like.
When they finally made it back to Los Angeles, Kona didn’t just adjust—she thrived.
“She instantly got along with our dogs,” Alexandrian said.
Today, Kona sleeps in Alexandrian’s bed every night and even tags along to the barn. A viral TikTok video documenting her journey has racked up over 2.2 million views, with hundreds of thousands of likes pouring in from emotional viewers.
Comments flooded in, with many praising the family’s compassion.
“Some of us cry seeing how beautiful humans can be,” one person wrote.
But for Alexandrian, the most emotional moment came at the very end of the journey.
“When we landed back in Los Angeles, she was so excited I had to wait before taking her out of the crate,” she said. “That’s when it really felt like she knew she was finally safe.”
