Two tiny rescue dogs who were once too scared to even be picked up are now melting hearts online—and it’s all thanks to a foster couple who refused to give up on them.
Tate Mitchell, 29, and her wife Katie Heinrich, 32, from New York City, are known for opening their home to animals in need. Through their TikTok account @katieandtatesfostermates, they’ve built a following by showing the emotional journeys of foster pets as they learn to trust again.
Their latest story? A deeply bonded pair of Chihuahuas named Carla and Rosy who arrived completely terrified of human touch—especially being picked up.
For over a month, the couple worked patiently with the dogs, but one fear just wouldn’t budge. Every time they tried to lift them, the pups panicked. That’s when they decided to try something new.
Instead of waiting for the dogs to come around, they gently picked them up anyway—but with a twist.
“We’re trying to show them that being picked up doesn’t always mean something scary is about to happen,” they explained.
What happened next is the moment that’s now going viral.
As the women carefully held the trembling pups, they immediately rewarded them with treats—turkey slices, cheese, soft praise, and lots of gentle affection. At first, both dogs were visibly nervous, stiff in their arms and unsure of what was happening.
But then… something shifted.
Rosy was the first to relax, slowly settling into their arms as she realized she was safe. Then came Carla, who started off even more frightened—shaking as she was held—but by the end, she was leaning in, soaking up pets, kisses, and comfort like she had been waiting for it all along.
