What started as a short volunteer trip to Africa turned into a life-changing rescue story that’s now blowing up online—and the before-and-after will seriously leave you stunned.
A woman named Julia was just days into a two-week volunteer program in Ghana when a young boy brought her a tiny, critically ill puppy found in a roadside gutter. The dog—now named Apricot—was barely hanging on.
“She probably had a few days left,” Julia said. “Everything was wrong.”
The puppy was covered in cuts, severely underweight, and battling a heavy worm infection. But from the moment they met, the two formed an instant bond. Apricot kept jumping into Julia’s lap, and that was it—Julia knew she couldn’t walk away.
With limited resources, she made a 2.5-hour trip to the nearest vet clinic to get the puppy emergency care. That saved her life—but it was just the beginning.
Because Ghana is considered a high-risk rabies country, strict rules meant Apricot couldn’t leave right away. Instead, she had to stay behind for months in quarantine until she was old enough and fully vaccinated.
So Julia did something most people wouldn’t—she left the country… but not the dog.
She arranged for Apricot to stay at the clinic’s shelter and then came back months later to bring her home.
When she returned, the puppy was still fragile—and the stress of being confined had taken a toll. But Julia wasn’t giving up.
What followed was a complicated, emotional journey across multiple countries and flights. Apricot had to travel in cargo, and Julia had no idea if they’d even make it to the same destination.
But they did.
After finally arriving in the U.S., Apricot still needed more treatment, including care for a tick-borne illness and additional quarantine. But once she made it home to New Jersey, everything started to change.
Slowly but surely, the once-sick puppy began to transform.
Today, more than a year later, Apricot looks like a completely different dog. Her coat developed unique spotted markings that have people comparing her to Bambi, and she’s now living a happy, healthy life with Julia and her family.
She’s even undergone multiple surgeries to fix issues with her knees—and through it all, she’s kept fighting.
