This little dog went from a life of heartbreak to finally discovering what love feels like — and people everywhere are tearing up watching his journey.
Pretzel the poodle spent years living a life no animal should ever have to endure. He was found in a puppy mill in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he had been kept in isolation, denied basic care, and used only for breeding. There was no play, no affection, and no real life — just a cage.
Even his age is uncertain. While the breeder claimed Pretzel was just 18 months old, a veterinarian later estimated he could be anywhere between 5 and 7 years old.
Everything changed when he was rescued by Phoenix Animal Rescue and placed into foster care. That’s when his story reached Sarah Pawlak, a 31-year-old from New Jersey who instantly knew she had to step in.
“He just needed a second chance,” she said.
When Pretzel was first rescued, his condition was heartbreaking. He was severely underweight, his fur was so matted it had to be completely shaved off, and he was missing 25 teeth. But the emotional damage was just as severe.
“Pretzel wouldn’t stop shaking,” Pawlak explained. “He was kept in total isolation, so everything was new to him. He seemed depressed and resigned — there was absolutely no life in his eyes.”
She added that he had likely broken his teeth from chewing on the bars of his cage, a desperate attempt to cope with his environment.
Since being adopted on February 16, Pretzel has slowly started to heal — both physically and emotionally. It hasn’t been easy, and Pawlak has been working with specialists to help him through separation anxiety. Experts believe he has become deeply attached to her because she represents safety, something he never had before.
But despite everything he’s been through, Pretzel is finally getting to experience life for the very first time.
His first walk.
His first toy.
His first treat.
Even his first time sleeping in a real bed.
And some of the moments are almost too sweet to handle.

“Before being rescued, he had never seen the sky,” Pawlak said. “His feet had never touched grass. He had never seen snow.”
She even recalled the first time he discovered his own tail — and couldn’t stop chasing it.
Over the past few months, Pawlak has been documenting these milestones and sharing them on TikTok (@sarah_valentia). One video capturing Pretzel’s journey has already drawn over 26,800 views and more than 3,800 likes, with viewers completely moved by his transformation.
The response online has been overwhelmingly supportive, and Pawlak hopes Pretzel’s story helps shine a light on the reality of puppy mills.
“The outpouring of support has been so heartwarming,” she said. “He is such a special dog, to be able to learn to trust again after everything he’s been through.”
She also hopes people take a moment to think before getting a pet.
“Thousands of dogs in puppy mills live in terrible conditions and are discarded when they’re no longer useful,” she explained. “They live lives of isolation and neglect. We still have a long road ahead, but we’re going to help Pretzel every step of the way.”
For Pretzel, life is finally beginning — and this time, it’s filled with love.
