A dog found barely clinging to life on the side of a Connecticut road is now getting a second chance — and his story is nothing short of heartbreaking and inspiring.
The pup, now named Tony, was discovered along Route 69 in Wolcott on the morning of April 18. At first glance, the situation looked grim. Good Samaritans who stopped to help initially believed he had already died.
But then, a small sign of life.
According to the Wolcott Police Department, Tony was still breathing — though just barely. He could only move a short distance before collapsing again, clearly exhausted and in terrible shape.
With traffic being held back by officers, rescuers carefully secured Tony and rushed him to safety at the local dog pound.
That’s when the full extent of his condition became clear.
Tony’s body was completely covered in ticks — hundreds of them. His ears were so infested they appeared black inside. On top of that, he had multiple bite wounds and was severely weakened, both physically and emotionally.
He wasn’t just sick. He was broken.
But this is where Tony’s story begins to turn.
Just two days later, he was taken to a local grooming team who spent four and a half hours carefully removing nearly 900 ticks from his body. Through it all, Tony stayed calm and gentle, winning over everyone he met.
After grooming, he was brought to the vet for a full exam. Doctors found he was anemic and started him on antibiotics and a specialized recovery plan, including proper nutrition, supplements, and close monitoring.
Right now, Tony is still healing — but he’s already showing huge signs of improvement.
He’s slowly becoming more energetic, more curious, and more comfortable around people. In fact, rescuers say he’s just now learning what it means to be a dog.
Toys, attention, affection — it’s all brand new to him.
Step by step, he’s being introduced to the world in a safe and loving way, with plans to gradually help him build confidence and experience life beyond survival.
There’s still a long road ahead, but one thing is clear: Tony is a fighter.
And thanks to the people who refused to give up on him, this once-forgotten dog now has something he may have never known before — hope.
