A 95-pound farm dog may be used to protecting animals much bigger than himself, but one tiny kitten has apparently convinced him that size means absolutely nothing.
In an adorable Instagram video, a massive black-and-white livestock guardian dog meets a kitten who looks like a miniature version of himself. The two couldn’t be more different in size, but the little feline clearly isn’t interested in making friends just yet.
At first, the dog seems curious about his pint-sized visitor. He approaches the kitten, who is standing nearby in a barn, seemingly hoping to get a closer look.
Unfortunately for the gentle giant, the kitten has other ideas.
As the dog gets closer, the tiny furball lets out a warning hiss. Rather than immediately walking away, the curious pup moves a little closer, appearing unsure what to make of the feisty little creature.
That’s when the kitten really makes his feelings known.
With a few more hisses and meows, the little feline stands his ground, seemingly determined to keep the enormous dog at a comfortable distance.
And somehow, it works!

The dog suddenly turns around and starts walking away. He pauses to glance back at the kitten one last time before apparently deciding that this particular friendship can wait.
It’s an especially funny sight considering the enormous difference in their sizes. The dog weighs 95 pounds, while his tiny opponent looks small enough to fit comfortably in someone’s arms.
Even their matching black-and-white coats make the encounter sweeter. They could almost pass for a big brother and little sibling, although the kitten clearly hasn’t accepted that arrangement.
While the interaction is entertaining, the kitten’s behavior is perfectly normal. Cats often hiss when they feel uncertain, frightened or uncomfortable with another animal getting too close. It’s their way of asking for some personal space.
The dog’s decision to retreat is also encouraging. Rather than continuing to crowd the kitten, he eventually gives the little animal room to relax.
Animal behavior experts generally recommend allowing cats and dogs to become familiar with each other gradually, particularly when there’s such a dramatic size difference. Supervised introductions and plenty of space can help prevent either pet from becoming overwhelmed.
As for this unlikely pair, it’s impossible to know whether they’ll eventually become friends. But their first meeting certainly gave animal lovers something to smile about.
After all, it takes a special kind of confidence to stand up to someone many times your size.
