A beloved dog who vanished into the freezing Alaska wilderness after a terrifying avalanche has been found alive following a desperate 50-hour search that brought together dozens of volunteers.

LouLou, a 4-year-old Poodle-Husky mix, was hiking with two experienced mountaineers in Alaska’s Chugach State Park on October 10 when disaster struck.

An avalanche suddenly swept the men approximately 500 feet down a mountain ridge, leaving both seriously injured.

One climber, identified as Brian, suffered a broken jaw and a severe hand injury. His climbing partner sustained three broken ribs and a fractured vertebra.

Both men survived and were rushed to the hospital, but their four-legged hiking companion was nowhere to be found.

With freezing temperatures, rugged terrain and unpredictable weather, LouLou’s family feared the worst.

Her owner, Lauren Padawer, was more than 5,000 miles away celebrating her father’s 80th birthday when she learned what had happened.

Despite being overseas, Lauren immediately began organizing a search, contacting animal rescue organizations, hiking groups, mountaineers and anyone who might be able to help.

More than 20 volunteers eventually joined the effort, including experienced hikers, helicopter pilots and a search dog.

There was one small piece of technology that offered hope: LouLou was wearing an Apple AirTag.

Unfortunately, its initial location estimate was nearly half a mile off. In Alaska’s unforgiving mountains, that distance could mean an entirely different mountainside.

Lauren refused to give up.

Working remotely, she compared satellite images and detailed maps while volunteers searched the wilderness.

Pilots Amanda Barker and Dave Beckett also joined the mission, using a helicopter to search the rugged terrain and obtain additional AirTag signals.

Then, after approximately 50 hours, the moment everyone had been praying for finally arrived.

The pilots spotted LouLou standing in the snow!

They landed nearby and approached the frightened but resilient dog on foot before bringing her to safety.

When Lauren received a photograph confirming LouLou was alive, she could barely believe it.

“I was shocked!” she told PEOPLE. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was too good to be true. I cried.”

Even more amazingly, LouLou had survived her ordeal with relatively minor injuries.

She appeared to have broken a toe and damaged one of her canine teeth, but otherwise seemed remarkably healthy considering everything she had endured.

And after spending more than two days alone in the snowy mountains, the adventurous pup was finally able to enjoy some much-deserved relaxation.

“She’s amazing,” Lauren said. “She’s enjoying the couch and naps. Otherwise back to normal.”

LouLou’s love of the outdoors may have helped her survive.

Adopted in 2023, the energetic Poodle-Husky mix was already an experienced hiking and backcountry skiing companion. Lauren explained that her thick coat and comfort in cold conditions could have worked in her favor.

Still, surviving alone in avalanche terrain was an extraordinary stroke of good fortune, and her rescue depended on much more than her natural abilities.

Lauren credited the dedication of the volunteers, particularly pilots Barker and Beckett, with bringing her beloved companion home.

Their determination transformed what could have been a heartbreaking tragedy into an unforgettable reunion.

And in typical LouLou fashion, the adventurous pup reportedly greeted her rescuers with a little caution before accepting her ride to safety.

After 50 hours stranded in the Alaska wilderness, LouLou is finally back where she belongs, resting comfortably at home.

Sometimes the happiest endings come after the most frightening adventures.
