Sometimes, missing a flight turns out to be the best thing that could ever happen. Just ask one Minnesota man who went outside for a quick smoke break and ended up finding the tiniest, most unexpected travel companion!
Virgil Wiebe was having a frustrating day at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport after missing his connecting flight. With hours to spare before his next departure, he stepped outside Terminal 1 to enjoy a cigar near a small grassy area.
That’s when an adorable little orange kitten suddenly appeared and came running straight toward him.
“He sort of appeared out of nowhere,” Wiebe told NBC Chicago.
The tiny furball, believed to be just 3 weeks old, was wandering around the busy airport all alone. Concerned about the little guy, Wiebe searched the nearby bushes, hoping to find his mother or any siblings. But there wasn’t another cat in sight.
And just like that, his travel plans changed completely.
Instead of leaving the helpless kitten behind, Wiebe scooped him up and headed back into the terminal, determined to figure out how to bring his unexpected new friend home.
There was just one little problem. He had absolutely no cat supplies, and his flight was getting ready to board!
Even airport security seemed surprised by the unusual situation.
“The TSA agent had no idea what to do, said they never seen a stray at the airport,” Wiebe recalled.
Fortunately, the agents explained that he would need a pet carrier before bringing the kitten onto the plane.
With no time to leave the airport, Wiebe came up with a clever solution. He ordered a carrier and kitten formula through DoorDash and had everything delivered directly to the terminal.
United Airlines also stepped in to help, allowing him to add the kitten to his reservation for a $150 pet fee.
Before long, the little orange stowaway was officially cleared for takeoff!
Of course, such an extraordinary rescue deserved an equally memorable name.
Wiebe decided to call his new companion Macanudo O’Hare, combining the brand of cigar he had been smoking when they met with the airport where the kitten found him. Thankfully, the little guy also has a much easier nickname: Harry.
And honestly, could there be a more perfect name for a kitten who practically adopted himself at an airport?
Nobody knows how Harry ended up wandering alone outside one of the busiest airports in the world. But somehow, he managed to find exactly the right person at exactly the right moment.
Now safely home in Minnesota, Harry has traded the chaos of airport traffic for a warm home and a family who adores him.
“He’s just a joyful little thing, and it’s so coincidental how it all happened,” Wiebe said.
“Who knows where Harry came from, but now he’s ours.”
What started as a missed connection turned into the sweetest connection of all. And something tells us Virgil won’t be complaining about that flight delay anytime soon!
