Cats are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you might get when it comes to their personalities. Some kitties purr affectionately as you stroke their bellies and others sing like songbirds with the magic touch of scratches behind their ears. Others like TikTok famous Nicki, the Tortoiseshell feline, have strong opinions about everything!

At first glance, she is comfortably sitting perched in the crook of her mom’s arms, soaking up the cuddle-time and enjoying the gentle pets she is receiving. However, once you turn up the volume, you can hear the rumbly, grumbly sounds she makes, and it is clear: Nicki has something to say.

This “Tortie,” the nickname used for Tortoiseshell cats, lives up to the talkative reputation they have in the pet world. These kitties have distinct black and red (shades of orange or yellow) color patterns. They are known for their bold, feisty, and sometimes attitudinal chattiness also called, “Tortitude.”

Many of @nicki_purrs videos on TikTok display her disdain for everything from the slightest shift or movement to her mom’s shoulder-length hair resting on her favorite snuggle spot. Her fan base knows her very well and the comment section is full of humorous thoughts from this tortoiseshell kitty’s fans. @thatocdswiftie says “I don’t think she realizes she’s not legally obligated to sit there.” A fellow Tortie mom, @Shar chimes in with “Mine grumbles like this when I sneeze or cough…like I’m ruining her life.”

Nicki’s grumbling purrs also summon other animals to the screen like a modern-day bat signal! @jody writes, “oh my cat didn’t like the noise she was making. came bolting into the room and right up to the phone lol” and @Millie Jo says, “what is she saying!?! my dog just stopped chewing his fave bone to come check on me!”

Although this kitty appears to have a rough and gruff outward appearance, Tortie’s are generally very loving and loyal companions. In fact, there are myths and ancient folklore about tortoiseshell cats that state they bring their owners good luck and fortune.

  1. That’s one of the things I really like about cats – you can’t make them do anything they do not want to do!!! I totally get them.
