One particularly love-struck woodpecker is ruffling feathers—and shattering car mirrors—on the quiet streets of Rockport, Massachusetts.

Locals say the culprit is a flashy male pileated woodpecker, a crow-sized bird best known for his dramatic red crest and cartoonish energy (he’s the real-life inspiration behind Woody Woodpecker). But instead of tapping on tree trunks, this feathered vandal has taken his passion to parked cars, smashing at least 25 side mirrors—and counting.

Resident Janelle Favaloro was the first to crack the case after catching the bird in the act. She turned to Facebook to warn her neighbors with a cheeky description: “He is described as 18″–24″ tall, wearing black and white, with a red hat.” Not an April Fool’s joke—just your local avian Casanova getting territorial.

Turns out, the bird’s aggressive behavior is all part of mating season, which experts say can run into June. According to Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill, “When birds see their reflection, especially during mating season, they can mistake it for a rival. And that’s when the pecking begins.”

Since March, neighbors have been swapping stories—and protective hacks. One man had his truck window cracked while sitting inside. Others have resorted to covering their mirrors with scarves, grocery bags, or simply folding them in. “You just do what you gotta do,” Favaloro laughed.

Despite the damage, most residents are taking the situation with humor and heart. “It’s definitely inconvenient for some people,” she said, “but I think it’s really entertaining… The neighborhood is embracing it.”

As for the woodpecker’s method of impressing the ladies? Favaloro has a tip: “This is not really the best way to attract a mate. I don’t think the women are going to be impressed.”

Just another reminder that sometimes, love taps a little too hard.
