Talk about a miracle rescue!

A dog named Ally, who had been missing for over a month, is finally back home after firefighters in West Springfield, Massachusetts, stumbled across her during a totally unrelated emergency.

On April 21, the West Springfield Fire Department shared on Facebook that they had been called out to handle a fiery car crash on Interstate 91. When they arrived, one vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, and a ruptured gas tank was spilling gasoline onto the road, dangerously close to storm drains.

Thankfully, the driver was pulled from the burning vehicle and rushed to the hospital. While they suffered burns and smoke inhalation, doctors expect them to fully recover.

After putting out the fire, crews stayed on the scene to prevent the spilled fuel from leaking into the drains. That’s when they got a big surprise. As they worked, they heard faint yelps coming from one of the nearby storm drains. Firefighter Justin Burchell followed the sounds and found a black-and-white dog stuck deep inside.

Rescuers carefully pulled the pup out and rushed her to the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center in Springfield. There, a vet checked her out and scanned her microchip — and that’s when the story got even sweeter. The dog was identified as Ally, a beloved family pet who had been missing for 34 long days.

“We don’t know how she ended up down there or how long she’d been stuck,” said Renee Robichaud, a supervisor at the animal control center, in an interview with Western Mass News. “There hadn’t even been a single sighting of her until the car caught on fire.”

Lieutenant Dennis Foley of the fire department couldn’t believe how lucky the discovery was, joking, “I think winning the lottery would be better odds than us finding a dog that we weren’t even looking for.”

Thanks to a random twist of fate — and the quick ears and big hearts of first responders — Ally is now safely back with her family, happy and healing after her wild adventure.
