After spending their entire lives in cages, a group of beagles is finally getting their first taste of freedom — and even something as simple as a hug is brand new to them.
In a major rescue effort, Ridglan Farms, a breeding and research facility in Wisconsin, agreed to transfer all 1,500 of its beagles to animal welfare groups as part of a confidential deal. The dogs are now being relocated across the country in hopes of finding loving homes.
Leading the effort is Big Dog Ranch Rescue, which has been working with partners to place the dogs. One of those partners, Pilots To The Rescue, is helping move the dogs to areas where they have the best chance of being adopted.
Their mission is simple: fly animals to safety.
On May 2, volunteer pilots transported 16 of the rescued beagles from Wisconsin to New Jersey — as many as their plane could safely carry. For these dogs, the journey marked a life-changing moment.

“These beagles had only known confinement,” said founder Michael Schneider. “Now they’re experiencing care and compassion for the very first time.”
Rescuers say many of the dogs were clearly scared and withdrawn after years in captivity. Some appeared shut down, unsure of their new surroundings. But as the trip went on — and as volunteers began showing them affection — small signs of change started to appear.
They were beginning to open up.
Once the plane landed, the dogs were handed off to several rescue groups, including ARF of the Hamptons, Old Dominion Humane Society, and NYC Second Chance Rescue.

From there, they’ll receive medical treatment, behavioral care, and the time they need to adjust before being placed with adoptive families.
For dogs who spent their lives behind bars, this is just the beginning.
And for the first time, they’re learning what it feels like to be safe — and loved.
