Elephants really know how to live it up—and their family bonds are just as tight (and goofy) as any human clan. If you grew up with cousins who felt more like siblings, you’ll totally get what these two baby elephants are all about.

While a herd was making its way home one evening, young elephant cousins Lenny and Zigi decided to turn the trek into a comedy show—especially little Zigi, who was clearly in the mood to play.

Lenny took the lead, marching confidently down the path like the responsible cousin. But behind him? Zigi had other plans. Instead of walking like a normal elephant, Zigi propped his front legs up on Lenny’s back, basically turning their journey into the world’s most adorable piggyback ride.

As Lenny led the Umani herd home for the evening, Zigi decided to hitch a free ride! This is classic playful behaviour among baby elephants — entertaining and energy efficient. Zigi even catches some air at the end! Lenny and Zigi are among 77 known calves born to orphans we rescued, raised, and reintegrated into the wild. These young elephants are the greatest testament to the success of our Orphans’ Project — showing how saving one orphan can pave the way for generations of elephants. Apparently, Zigi decided walking on all four legs was for amateurs. Two legs and a cousin-mount would do just fine.

The antics continued until Nanny Enkesha—an older, wiser elephant in the herd—finally stepped in. Using her trunk like a mom with “the look,” she gently but firmly put an end to Zigi’s hitchhiking adventure.

Still, the moment was pure magic—and a perfect reminder that even elephants know how to make the most of family time.
