Bringing home a new puppy should be a joyful event—but one dog mom found out the hard way that not everyone in the house was thrilled with the newest family member.
In a now-viral TikTok, a pet owner shared the aftermath of what looked like a canine protest: shredded couches, fluff everywhere, and a serious case of sibling rivalry. The caption said it all: “Throwback from when my dogs decided to tear up my couches. They’ve always been out the crate and never have they done anything like this—until I got a new puppy. No, they didn’t swallow or eat anything, just tore it up—I guess they had to prove a point!”

Since it was posted, the video has racked up more than 866,000 views, sparking a flood of comments from fellow pet parents who could relate all too well.
“My Dane tore up the couch too, and he’s never done that before,” one commenter wrote. “Then my little mutt—I’ve had for nine years!—dug a hole in BOTH couches in the camper. I cried, especially after checking couch prices.”
Another viewer chimed in with a familiar tale: “My parents’ first dog did something like this when they got a new puppy. He peed in the basement, shredded blankets, chewed shoes and remotes. He was clearly jealous and not getting enough attention.”
A third recalled: “My oldest dog did this once when we brought a new puppy home. He’s never been in a crate, but he definitely wasn’t a fan of the new guy. Still won’t go near a crate to this day.”
The great couch massacre quickly turned into a lively conversation about jealousy, training, and whether dogs should be crated when left alone. While some urged the owner to kennel her dogs moving forward, others were more sympathetic, pointing out that these kinds of hiccups are part of the adjustment process.
As one commenter put it: “People are telling you to crate them, but honestly, it was a judgment call. Your dog probably wouldn’t have done anything if it wasn’t for the puppy. Sometimes puppies learn from the older dogs—but sometimes the older ones regress too.”
