Raising a baby is a full-time job — whether you’re human or covered in fur. And at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Washington, one tiny otter is learning that lesson firsthand.
The zoo recently welcomed a new Asian small-clawed otter pup, and proud parents Pintar and Sebastian have officially begun teaching their little one an essential life skill: swimming. But as an adorable behind-the-scenes video shows, mom and dad couldn’t be more different in how they approach the lesson.
In the clip, the baby otter is in the water with both parents nearby. Mom Pintar clearly believes in a “sink or swim” philosophy, confidently giving her pup a gentle toss into the pool. Dad Sebastian, on the other hand, is having none of it — hovering close by like a worried lifeguard, ready to jump in at the first sign of trouble.

The zoo summed it up perfectly in the caption of their “pupdate,” explaining that swimming lessons are officially underway, but with mixed opinions. While Pintar is convinced her pup is ready, Sebastian immediately tries to intervene, making it clear he’s not so sure about mom’s teaching methods.
Viewers couldn’t get enough of the hilarious contrast.
One commenter joked that the video felt impossibly long because they couldn’t stop watching it. Others imagined the conversation between the parents, with mom insisting the baby was fine and dad panicking just in case. Another viewer perfectly described the lesson as less of a class and more of a “PLOP! GO!!” moment.
Many people praised Sebastian for his dedication, calling him the ultimate helicopter parent and lifeguard on duty. Others simply melted over how precious the little otter family looked together.
Animal parenting never fails to entertain, and this tiny otter’s first swim lesson delivered both laughs and heartwarming moments in equal measure. If this is just the beginning, fans are already eager for more baby otter updates from Point Defiance.
