A woman says she was left completely stunned after discovering she and her beloved dog were battling the same life-threatening disease at the same time.
Vickie Doogan, 52, has already faced breast cancer not once — but twice. But nothing could have prepared her for what came next.
After adopting a small dog named Dolly while recovering from her own double mastectomy, Doogan thought she had found the perfect companion to help her heal. The two quickly became inseparable, with Doogan describing Dolly as her “shadow” and constant source of comfort.
But in a shocking twist, their journeys would soon mirror each other in a way no one expected.
Doogan was first diagnosed with cancer at just 32 after discovering a lump in her arm. She endured eight rounds of chemotherapy and 15 rounds of radiation in what she described as a brutal fight.
Years later, at 44, she was hit with the devastating news again.
Doctors discovered she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation, which significantly increases the risk of breast cancer. Faced with the odds, Doogan made the difficult decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy.
While recovering at home, she adopted Dolly — a move that would end up changing both of their lives.
Fast forward to February 2026, when Doogan took Dolly to the vet for what seemed like a minor issue. But during the checkup, the vet made a startling discovery — a lump near one of Dolly’s nipples.
The diagnosis? Cancer.
“I was so shocked — I didn’t even know dogs could have mastectomies,” Doogan said.
Just like her owner, Dolly underwent surgery to remove the cancer. Thankfully, the tumor was caught early and classified as low-grade.
In an incredible turn of events, both Doogan and Dolly came through their surgeries and are now cancer-free.
“She bounced back just as well as I did,” Doogan said. “People told me it’s like she mirrored how I handled everything.”
Now, after years of pain, fear, and recovery, Doogan says she’s finally moving forward — with her loyal companion right by her side.
“It’s all behind me now,” she said. “I’m living my best life again.”
What started as a heartbreaking coincidence has turned into a powerful story of resilience, survival, and an unbreakable bond between a woman and her dog.
