A missing indoor cat gave his family the scare of a lifetime after disappearing for days and somehow ending up on a wild 15-mile ride under a car.
Four-year-old Olaf went missing from his home in Braintree, England, leaving his owner, Hazel Ohler, terrified. The nervous cat was not used to outdoor life, making his disappearance even more frightening.
But Olaf had not just wandered off. He had apparently found shelter underneath a gray car, and that decision sent him on an unexpected journey miles away from home.
The car belonged to Abigail Harrison, a manager at Cats Protection, an animal welfare organization that helps cats and kittens in Essex.
According to the group, Olaf clung to the vehicle for about 15 miles before the car pulled into a parking lot. Video footage showed the gray car arriving before Olaf suddenly darted out from underneath it.
“My colleague Bex Prentice arrived just after and spotted a cat having fallen from my car,” Harrison said.
Prentice quickly jumped into action, scooping up the frightened cat while another team member, Maddie Newbury, grabbed a carrier before Olaf could run into nearby traffic.
“It all happened so quickly,” Harrison said.
Thankfully, Olaf was in the right place at the right time. The Cats Protection team checked his microchip and discovered he belonged to Ohler.
The call was a miracle for his worried owner.
“Olaf is a scaredy-cat who can be afraid of his own shadow, so this must have been so traumatic for him,” Ohler said.
She said Olaf had rarely been outside because he was an indoor cat. As the days passed with no sign of him, she feared the worst.
Ohler and her family had done everything they could to find him. They put up posters, shared social media appeals, searched garages and gardens, and even left out his litter tray, food, and a blanket from her bed in hopes he would catch the scent.
But every day without Olaf made her lose a little more hope.
Then Cats Protection called with the news she had been praying for. Olaf had been found safe and well, even if his journey there sounded like something out of a movie.
“I couldn’t believe it when Cats Protection called to say they had found him safe and well — especially when I learned how he had ended up miles from home, trapped under a car,” she said.
Olaf was described as a bit skittish after the ordeal, but amazingly, he was not injured. He was checked by a veterinarian after his dramatic ride.
Harrison believes Olaf may have climbed under the bonnet or into the wheel arch near her home and fallen asleep before the car set off.
The wild rescue is also a reminder of how important microchips can be. Without Olaf’s chip and updated contact details, getting him back home might have been much harder.
Ohler said she is deeply grateful to the Cats Protection team for caring for their surprise passenger and returning him so quickly.
After days of fear, one nervous little cat is finally back where he belongs.
