After years of hoping, waiting, and never forgetting the dog who stole his heart overseas, a U.S. Air Force reservist has finally been reunited with the retired military working dog he always dreamed of bringing home.

Senior Airman Alex Jones reunited with Max, a retired Military Working Dog, during a special ceremony hosted by the nonprofit Paws of War on Friday, May 22, in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina.

Jones first met Max while stationed in Korea in 2020. Even though the two were not officially paired together for missions, the bond between them was impossible to miss.

According to Paws of War, Jones spent a lot of time with Max during his deployment. The dog quickly became one of those animals a person never forgets.

And Jones didn’t.

After returning home, he continued thinking about Max and hoped that one day, when the dog’s military service ended, he might get the chance to adopt him.

That day finally came.

“When Senior Airman Alex Jones was stationed in Korea in 2020, he met a dog named Max who captured his heart and attention,” Paws of War said in a release.

For Jones, the reunion was more than just a happy moment. It was the ending he had quietly wished for over the years.

“You always remember the good dogs,” Jones said before seeing Max again.

“Max is one of those good dogs that you never forget,” he added. “He taught me so much and had such a great presence. I am honored and so happy that he will get to spend his retirement years living with me.”

Jones said he is now looking forward to giving Max the peaceful, comfortable life he earned after years of service.

Photos from the event showed Jones and Max together again for the first time in years as supporters gathered to celebrate the retired military dog.

During the ceremony, Paws of War presented Max with its Hero with a Heart award, recognizing his dedication and service.

The organization said the emotional moment marked not only the end of Max’s military career, but the beginning of a new life with the person who never forgot him.

“As Paws of War presents Max with the Hero with a Heart award, the long-awaited moment will mark not just the end of Max’s service, but the beginning of a well-earned life together,” the organization said.

Paws of War is a nonprofit that supports veterans, active-duty military members, and first responders. The group helps with everything from veterinary care and food insecurity to relocating pets for deployed service members.

Now, thanks to that work, Max will spend his retirement exactly where Jones always hoped he would be: home.

For Jones, it is a reunion years in the making.

For Max, it is the reward every good dog deserves.
