A rescued elephant in Thailand is melting hearts after she was filmed joyfully splashing in the water following years of exploitation.
The elephant, named Sompan, was captured enjoying a carefree swim in a video shared on TikTok by Samui Elephant Sanctuary.
In the clip, Sompan splashes around enthusiastically, repeatedly dipping her head into the water and using her trunk to play. She can also be heard making a series of happy rumbles, chirps and squeals as she enjoys the moment.
“After years of exploitation, Sompan is free to enjoy the water whenever she chooses,” text over the video reads.
The sanctuary explained that the sounds Sompan makes are a natural part of elephant communication.
“The gentle rumbles, chirps, and playful sounds you hear are all part of how elephants express themselves,” the sanctuary wrote.
“These moments are a lovely reminder of the personalities and natural behaviors that rescued elephants can express when they’re given the freedom to simply be themselves!”

Some commenters were especially surprised by the joyful noises Sompan made, with one person saying they had never heard an elephant squeal with happiness before.
Others simply said the video was a reminder that elephants deserve to live freely.
Sompan arrived at Samui Elephant Sanctuary in August 2024.
According to the sanctuary, she is a female elephant now in her 50s whose working life began in Mae Sot District in Thailand’s Tak Province, near the Thai-Myanmar border.
She was originally used in the logging industry before later being sold and put to work in Thailand’s tourism industry.
Eventually, concerns about her welfare led her owner to contact Samui Elephant Sanctuary about rescuing her.
At the sanctuary, rescued elephants are given large shelters, plenty of food and water, access to veterinary care and the ability to roam through a spacious forested environment.
Sompan also has the opportunity to interact with other rescued elephants and live in a much more natural setting.
Since arriving, the sanctuary says Sompan has been adapting well to her new life and exploring her jungle surroundings.
Staff hope she will continue making new friends as she settles in.
For now, her playful swim is giving viewers a glimpse of just how much her life has changed.
After years of working for humans, Sompan can finally enjoy simple pleasures like splashing in the water whenever she wants.
