Finley isn’t your average Labrador.
The striking young dog has been turning heads online thanks to his unusual black-and-golden coat, but there’s much more to this handsome pup than his eye-catching looks.
Born on Aug. 15, 2024, Finley has grown from a floppy-eared puppy with oversized paws into an athletic working dog with an adventurous future ahead of him.
His coat is especially unusual for a Labrador-type dog. The American Kennel Club recognizes only black, yellow and chocolate as standard Labrador Retriever colors, and combinations or patterns outside those colors are not part of the breed standard.

That means Finley’s striking markings could come from another breed somewhere in his family tree, though without a DNA test there’s no way to know for sure exactly where his coloring comes from.
Whatever the genetics behind that gorgeous coat, one thing is obvious: Finley was made to stand out.
And he isn’t just a pretty face.
Finley is training with Norske Redningshunder, or Norwegian Search and Rescue Dogs, where dogs and their handlers learn skills designed to help locate missing people.
Labradors are particularly well suited for demanding jobs like this. The breed is known for being intelligent, eager to please and highly trainable, and Labs are commonly used for search-and-rescue work, detection work and other service roles.
That makes Finley’s path especially fitting.

While plenty of dogs are perfectly happy spending their days stretched out on the couch, this adventurous pup appears to be headed toward a life of training, exploring and potentially helping people when they need it most.
His unusual coat may be what first catches everyone’s attention, but his growing skills could soon become the most impressive thing about him.
For now, Finley is still learning — but with those paws, that energy and one unforgettable face, he already looks like a very special dog in the making.
